A strong day at the plate propelled WKU Baseball over Eastern Kentucky in a 13-0 run-rule on Tuesday night.
The Hilltoppers move to 21-20 on the season with 15 games left.
WKU had an effective hitting day, racking up 15 hits and six walks. Junior infielder Lane Arroyos led the team, going 4-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. Junior outfielder Hayden Robbins had a team of three RBI, including a two-run home run.
They got off to a hot start in the opening frame. A sacrifice fly by graduate outfielder Parker Coley gave the Hilltoppers a quick 1-0 lead. Senior catcher Camden Ross extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single.
The Hilltoppers’ highest run frame came in the seventh inning, where they scored four. The inning began with back-to-back hits by pitches, followed by an RBI single by Arroyos. The other three runs were brought in by an RBI single by pinch-hitter senior Dalton Fiveash, an RBI double by junior outfielder Kiefer Tarnoki, and an RBI single by senior outfielder Daniel Stewart.
WKU also held a strong presence on the mound, using only two arms for seven innings of work. Sophomore left-hander Dominic Monaco started on the mound and pitched four innings of scoreless ball, tallying three walks and six strikeouts. Junior right-hander Trey Reinburg relieved Monaco and pitched the final three innings. Reinburg gave up one hit while getting two strikeouts.
EKU found minimal success on both sides of the ball, only tallying four hits and walking three times. The Colonels struck out eight times, including four times looking. EKU went 0-8 with runners on base and 1-7 with two outs.
The Colonels left six on base, including the bases loaded in the first inning.
Out of their 161 pitches, EKU threw 41% of those for balls, resulting in the Hilltoppers’ success at the plate.
WKU Baseball will continue midweek action, returning to Nick Denes Field to face Austin Peay on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch set for 6 p.m.
