WKU has added two signees to their 2018 recruiting class, as forwards Matthew Horton and Galen Smith signed their letters of intent on Thursday.
Horton is a community college transfer from Shelton State Community College. He went to Paul Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game.
“Matt brings a much-needed ability to our program,” WKU head coach Rick Stansbury said in a press release. “He’s got great size and athleticism. Again, we think his best days lie ahead of him. He’s just coming on as a player, but he can really block shots. As he continues to gain experience and get stronger, he’s got a bright future.”
Horton stands 6-11, 230 lbs. He averaged 5.7 PPG and 5.1 RPG while also shooting 67 percent in his first season at Shelton State. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining once he joins the Hilltoppers.
Smith, who is 6-9, is from Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, and held an offer from Conference USA foe Southern Miss. He’s a three-star prospect and is the No. 10 player in the state of Mississippi, according to the 247 Sports composite.
“We’re excited about what we think this young man can develop into,” Stansbury said in a press release. “No. 1, he’s a terrific student and comes from a great family. He’s a kid that grew about five inches between his freshman and junior year, so he has some skills with that size. He’s a hard worker, and there’s no question his best basketball days lie ahead of him.”
Smith averaged 13.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 2.1 BPG in his junior year of high school. Smith was named the South Mississippi Player of the Year by the Biloxi Sun Herald for his role in helping his team to a 25-6 regular season record.
Horton and Smith have become the third and fourth signees of the 2018 class, joining guards Trevelin Queen and Jeremiah Gambrell.
