The WKU volleyball team celebrates after winning the match against St. John’s University at Diddle Arena on Sept. 18, 2021.

The WKU Hilltoppers hosted the Charleston Golden Eagles at E.A. Diddle Arena on Sept. 9 in the Holiday Inn – University Plaza Invitational, and defeated them in three straight sets.

WKU Volleyball now holds a 6-4 record on the season.

In the first set, the Hilltoppers consistently made great plays resulting in kills, leading to a .304 team hitting average whereas Charleston put out .036. They claimed the set 25-16.

Additionally, the block put up by WKU added to their success, communicating well by calling out reads to assist the back row.

In the second set, WKU won 25-15. Redshirt sophomore setter Callie Bauer showcased her ability to spread the ball out among the entire offense and ended the game with 29 total assists.

In the third, WKU gave it their all to end the final set with a score of 25-13.

Also, the Hilltoppers’ back and front row defense performed well overall, rivaling Charleston with 38 total digs to their 30. WKU ended the game with eight block assists and six total blocks.

Fifth year outside hitter Paige Briggs led the team in kills with a total of ten, capitalizing on holes in the opposing block and making use of sets sent her way.

The Hilltoppers made a great comeback with today’s win after last night’s loss in their close battle with No. 17 Arkansas.

WKU Volleyball will travel to compete against Austin Peay State University on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. CST.
