Whether you use Spotify or Apple Music, prefer wired earbuds or wireless headphones or listen while studying or walking around campus, music is one thing we all share.
As the leaves fall, many people find different music to fit different autumn vibes. The Herald Editorial Board is no different.
Here’s what we’re listening to this fall (and what you should be, too).

Music has always been a super personal thing for me. I consider it to often be poetry just with a tune! Some songs just speak to the soul and those special ones tend to be my favorites:
- “Relay” by Fiona Apple
- “Look At The Time” by Sawyer Hill
- “What I Am” by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
- “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” by The Academic
- “Nature vs. Nurture” by Chase Petra

Walking to class on October mornings, wearing a big jacket and Doc Martens with Spencer’s coffee in hand and music playing through my earbuds, is one of my favorite feelings. (Can you tell fall is my favorite season?) The music I choose to listen to often reflects the time of year and affects my outlook on the day ahead. Some of the songs I’ve had on replay this month to celebrate fall are:
- “Drunk on Halloween” by Wallows
- “Tragedy” by Bee Gees
- “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
- “Vienna” by Billy Joel
- “Waiting Room” by Phoebe Bridgers
I also often prefer listening to entire albums from start to finish instead of curated playlists. “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac, “So Tonight That I Might See” by Mazzy Star and “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” by the Cranberries are some of my year-round go-to’s, but especially during this time of year.

Music has always been an important part of my life. I grew up as a dancer and spent a lot of time enjoying music and dancing to it. As I’ve grown up my music taste has shifted and I’ve started to listen to a variety of genres. Throughout the year I typically listen to Christian music as it helps me grow my faith and give me peace through stress. During the fall I tend to listen to more countries as I’ve always felt the sounds of certain country artists just enhance the richness of the fall season.
- “I Believe” by Phil Wickham
- “Sounds like the Radio” by Zach Top
- “No One Else Like Me” by The Red Clay Strays
- “Safe and Sound” by Forrest Frank
- “His Mercy is More” by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa

I have always considered music to be seasonal. I love it when a new season begins, and I can make a brand new playlist that reflects the vibes and feelings of that particular season. The five songs I listed above are some of my all-time favorites to listen to just as the temperature begins to drop and the trees begin to change colors.
My top 5 favorite songs to listen to during the fall include:
- “Coney Island” by Taylor Swift ft. The National
- “Ribs” by Lorde
- “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star
- “Casio” by Jungle
- “Japanese Denim” by Daniel Caesar

My music listening choices have always been a bit of a mixed bag, but recently I’ve fallen into a pattern of songs that use great songwriting to embody a deep emotional resonance. Some great songs that fall into that description are:
- “Waltz #2” by Elliott Smith
- “Black” by Pearl Jam
- “Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let it Roll)” by George Harrison
- “As” by Stevie Wonder
- “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin

I have always liked country music and it has a special place in my heart. I like how emotional and relatable the lyrics are and sometimes I just like how it sounds.
- “By your Grace” by Cody Johnson
- “Free” by Zac Brown Band
- “Space and Time” by Tyler Childers
- “The Kind of Love We Make” by Luke Combs
- “Your Smile” by Josh Turner

Music is such an integral part of expressing oneself. As we hunker in for the fall season, I’ve switched my upbeat repertoire for a more mellow and moody, cozy fall vibe. I like to enjoy my music at max volume in my car as I drive to and from school each day. Here are some of my most recent favorites. Be sure to drink some coffee and enjoy them for yourself.
- “Northern Attitude” by Noah Kahan
- “Stoned at the Nail Salon” by Lorde
- “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish
- “Killing Me Softly with His Song” by Fugees, Ms. Lauryn Hill
- “Didn’t Cha Know” by Erykah Badu
I am also a year-round Chappell Roan and Amy Winehouse enjoyer. Find yourself some music for this fall that resonates with the next chapter you manifest for yourself.

As of late, I’ve been into so many different things. I love jazz, so anything in that vein I am here for. I recently discovered a group called The California Honeydrops. Their album, “Keep on Diggin’,” is such a wonderful, easy listen. I highly recommend. I rarely listen to just one artist at a time, though.
Below are some of the songs I’ve had on repeat the last few weeks.
- “University of Bourbon Street” by Jimmy Buffet
- “It’s Alright (But It Ain’t The Same)” by The California Honeydrops
- “Singing My Prayer” by The California Honeydrops
- “Love Like You” by Emma Nissen
- “Too Much Livin’” by John R. Miller
You can also find me listening to Tyler Childers pretty regularly. Anything off his “Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven” or “Country Squire” albums are solid listens. He’s the best Kentucky musician around right now.
