Sarah-Kate Wiseman, a freshman from Louisville, practices walking around the halls of the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center in a dress she’ll wear for the WKU theater department’s production of Little Women, in which she’ll play Amy March. She had to practice a gliding motion with her feet in order to not trip over the dress. This will be Wiseman’s first time performing with the theater department.

The African American studies department held their annual Kwanzaa celebration on Dec. 2, 2021 in the Downing Student Union, explaining the holiday and having performances after explaining each of the seven days.

Dr. Saundra Curry Ardrey leads the crowd in welcoming their ancestors to celebrate Kwanzaa. The African tradition is meant to thank their ancestors for what they gave them and to ask permission to start the celebration.

Cathy drives the golf cart 5 miles on the backroads to take Junior to Chaney’s Dairy barn to get food and ice cream occasionally during the week.

Junior Morgan looks for a new book of inspirational quotes while at Barnes and Noble in Bowling Green on Oct. 21, 2021. After people said how much they loved a quote he posted two years ago, he now posts one on Facebook each night, picking from one of the 50 books he owns. He marks in his books which ones he’s already posted.

As Cathy Morgan makes breakfast, she asks Junior Morgan if he wants to help with different tasks, such as flipping sausage and making scrambled eggs in their home in Bowling Green on Oct. 21, 2021. To avoid being bossy, she asks instead of telling Junior to help. “I let him make up his mind about stuff,” Cathy says. They eat breakfast together each morning, waking up an hour before she needs to leave to clean houses.

She turns the recliner, sets up the stand and music, adjusts his light, and tunes the guitar. She also organized the folder with his music so he wouldn’t have to flip pages. “I played that really good,” Junior says.

Cathy Morgan always waits outside while Junior Morgan does CrossFit just in case he needs her, coming in at the end to walk him out to the car at CrossFit Old School on Oct. 19, 2021. Since Junior started doing CrossFit, Cathy noticed his boost in confidence. “Everybody here doesn’t look at his disabilities. They look at what he can do,” Cathy says. “They don’t cut him no slack.”

Junior Morgan participates in a workout in the 4:15 pm class at CrossFit Old School in Bowling Green on Oct. 21, 2021. He joked with the coach and encouraged the other people working out during the class. Junior has been coming to CrossFit every day except for Wednesday and Sunday for about 6 years. ‘“I love coming here,” Junior says. “I’m working hard.”

Junior Morgan practices guitar for about 45 minutes every night in his home in Bowling Green on Oct. 20, 2021. He also attends a weekly lesson. Learning the chords helps Junior with memory and fine motor skills, and his mom hopes it will help him avoid getting dementia. “I think keeping him busy will prolong it,” Cathy says. According to the National Down Syndrome Society, about 30% of individuals with Down syndrome have dementia in their 50s.
