Freshman center Charles Bassey was named Conference USA freshman of the week for the eighth time this season, following the Hilltoppers’ homestand, in which they defeated Middle Tennessee State and lost to Alabama Birmingham

Bassey maintained his season’s double-double average this week, averaging 18 points and 3.5 blocks per game during the week. He is one of three freshman averaging a double-double this season.

The award puts Bassey in second place for most Freshman of the Week awards in the history of the conference. Rice’s Marcus Evans, who won ten of the awards, holds the top spot.

Bassey has won the award four weeks straight, third most consecutive selections in C-USA history, with Evans holding the record with six.

Bassey and the Hilltoppers will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Old Dominion on the road.
