Freshman center Charles Bassey was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week for the seventh time this season, following the Hilltoppers’ successful road trip where they defeated both Rice and North Texas.

Bassey averaged a double-double for the week, averaging 14 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game during the week.

“That helps the guards mostly,” sophomore guard Taveion Hollingsworth said of Bassey’s performance in the North Texas game. “Because now everyone’s trying to dig so it was good for him to get it going and keep going in the second half.”

The award puts Bassey in third place for most Freshman of the Week awards in the history of the conference. Rice’s Marcus Evans, who won ten of the awards, holds the top spot.

Bassey and the Hilltoppers will be back in action on Thursday, taking on Middle Tennessee State at 7 p.m in Diddle Arena.
