WKU softball hasn’t competed well against other teams from Kentucky in recent years. That same statistic lives another day after Louisville swept the Lady Toppers Wednesday in a double header.

Cardinal pitcher Maryssa Becker tossed a no-hitter in game one to shut out WKU 3-0. Becker walked three hitters in seven innings with five strikeouts.

Senior Emily Rousseau allowed three runs on six hits for the whole game.

It was the first time this season that the Lady Toppers (16-10-1) have had more than five days in between games.

“I think the week off was detrimental to our momentum,” coach Amy Tudor said. “But Louisville beat us fair and square and played a nice ballgame.”

From an offensive standpoint, game two was much better for the Lady Toppers, but the result was still the same.

Freshman Hannah Miniard gave up four early runs on three hits in the only inning she pitched.

The Lady Topper bats didn’t heat up until the deficit was too large to overcome down 7-0.

WKU’s first run came in the bottom of the fourth when freshman India Steward scored sophomore Brooke Holloway.

After two base hits by junior Preslie Cruce and senior Olivia Watkins in the fifth inning, senior Kelsie Mattox hit a three run home run to cut the Louisville lead to 7-4.

Even after the momentum shift in the 5th, WKU was unable to tack on any more runs despite posting11 hits in the game.

WKU hosts its first conference home series of the season this weekend against Troy, a team the Lady Toppers have defeated five-straight times.

The Lady Toppers play the first of a three game series Saturday in a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
