Preview: Lady Toppers set to host Union University for second match of season

The Lady Toppers (1-0) are set to host the Union University Lady Bulldogs (0-0) Saturday night at the WKU Soccer Complex for their second match of the regular season. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Lady Toppers kicked off the regular season on Thursday night with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Austin Peay Governors, outshooting their opponents 23-2 in a dominant offensive display. The Lady Toppers have kept their opponents scoreless in three straight matches which include preseason contests with UT Martin and Bellarmine.

After a scoreless first half, WKU junior Katie Erwin notched the first goal of the game just past the 50th minute of play. WKU sophomore Annah Hopkins provided some insurance with a second goal, assisted by Erwin, less than four minutes later.

The Lady Bulldogs, a NCAA DII instituiton, went 0-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play during the 2020-21 season. Sophomore Claire Maxon scored one goal in a match against the University of Alabama-Huntsville, which would stand as the only goal scored by the her squad for the entirety of the season.

First kick is set for 7 p.m. CT this evening and admission is free.
