Micheels, Jacobsen collect individual C-USA awards
August 31, 2021
A pair of WKU Soccer student-athletes have earned awards this week following the program’s upset overtime victory over Vanderbilt last Thursday night.
Sophomore Brina Micheels was tabbed as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. Fifth year senior Avery Jacobsen was awarded with the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor.
The duo assisted the Lady Toppers in a 3-2 overtime win over preseason No. 18 Vanderbilt last Thursday night, combining to score and assist on all three of WKU’s goals.
Jacobsen scored the first goal of the match on a penalty kick, her first goal of the season and only the second of her collegiate career. She then assisted on Micheel’s free kick goal in overtime. The Las Vegas native played a crucial part in holding Vanderbilt’s aggressive offense to just two goals.
Jacobsen has now won the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Award a total of three times throughout her career as a Lady Topper.
Micheels found the back of the net twice last Thursday night, notching two goals including the game-winning goal to secure the victory. Her first goal came from a free kick opportunity. Jacobsen faked out the Commodore’s defense and Micheels booted the ball into the back of the net. Micheels’ second goal came in the third minute of overtime as she scored off a penalty kick. The Plattsburgh, New York native rocketed her shot past the Commodore’s keeper to upset Vanderbilt and claim the win for WKU.
The honors are the first weekly awards of Micheel’s career on the Hill.
The Lady Toppers will be back on the field on Friday, Sept. 3 to face off against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at the WKU Soccer Complex. First kick is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
