WKU Tennis ended its 2022 regular season with a 4-3 win over Conference USA foe  the Marshall Thundering Herd in Huntington, W.Va.

With another win under their belt, the Lady Toppers improved to 18-8 on the year and 2-1 in C-USA play. This is the first time WKU has had a winning record in conference play since the 2016-17 season.

WKU secured an early lead with a sweep doubles play. The duo of freshman Sofia Blanco and sophomore Samantha Martinez took the first match with a 6-2 victory, improving to 13-4 on the year. Redshirt senior Laura Bernardos and freshman Mariana Zegada won 6-3, securing a 1-0 lead for the Lady Toppers.

Marshall won the first three singles matches before Blanco started the WKU comeback by winning in straight sets. Freshman Rachel Hermanova won 6-2, 7-6 (5), tying the match up. The win was her 18th singles victory of the year, breaking the record for most singles wins in a season that Karina Ladaja set in 2003-04.

Zegada secured the win for WKU in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 match victory.

“It was a great win today,” WKU head coach Greg Davis said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team. To finish with five straight regular-season wins and to come here and have three freshmen at four, five and six pull it out, for us, was phenomenal.”

The Lady Toppers will play in the C-USA Tournament beginning April 21 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
