WKU Tennis defeats Belmont University

Rachel Hermanova, freshman and #4 singles seed, lost her match against UTC player Emma Van Hee on Sunday, February 27th. WKU Women’s Tennis won their match against UT Chattanooga overall 4-3.

WKU Tennis traveled to Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, Feb. 5 to face off against the Belmont Bruins. The Lady Toppers beat the Bruins 5-2. 

For the third consecutive match, the Lady Toppers won the doubles point. The Bruins were able to secure the first doubles win before the Lady Toppers dominated the rest of the matches. 

Junior Sayda Hernandez and Sophmore Mariana Zegada earned their first duo win of the season, 6-1. The Sophmore duo of Sofia Blanco and Rachel Hermanova improved to team best at 5-1, winning 6-4 over the Bruins. 

Going into singles play, the Bruins were able to even the score before the Lady Toppers took the lead for the final time. Blanco clinched a point for WKU after winning a three-set match. Hermanova also won three sets and secured the final point of the day, improving to 6-2 this season. 

“Winning the doubles point was huge in this match,” Head Coach Greg Davis said. “We used that momentum and it helped us keep the lead throughout the match. Our team played with a tremendous amount of heart, and I couldn’t be happier for them. It took a true team effort to beat a very talented Belmont team.”

WKU Tennis  will continue their season on their home courts in Bowling Green, Kentucky in a matchup against Murray State on Friday, February 10.
