WKU Women’s Golf places third in Reynold Lake Oconee Invite; Craig takes first overall

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers women’s golfer Sarah Arnold plays a practice round at Olde Stone Country Club.

WKU Women’s Golf finished third as a team in the Reynold Lake Oconee Invite hosted by Mercer University Feb. 17-19. Additionally, Sophomore Catie Craig secured her first individually collegiate win.

 The 52 hole tournament was played at Great Waters Course from 6001 yards, par 72.

In the first round, Freshman Sydney Hackett shot the lowest score of the Hilltoppers with a 77, placing her 26th in the field. Senior Sarah Arnold and sophomore Catie Craig placed just one stroke behind Hackett both shooting 78.

As a team, the Lady Toppers shot a 312. The 12-over score placed them ninth overall in a field of 12 teams.

On the second day of the Invitational, WKU posted the lowest team round in the field with a 295 (+7). The low round bumped the teams overall standings to fourth for the tournament.

Craig’s one-under round of 71 moved her up 20 spots on the leaderboard to 10th place in the field. Both Arnold and Hackett were tied for 20th with two day cumulative scores of 152.

Fifth year Kenlie Barrett improved her score by four shots from the first day to shoot a 75. Sophomore Faith Martin dropped five shots from her first round, carding a 78.

After the final round of the tournament, WKU found their spot on the leaderboard with a third place team finish. The Hilltoppers fired a cumulative 38-over par team score for all 52 holes.

Leading the Hilltoppers, Craig fired a 67 (-5) to close the tournament and take first place in the field as an individual. Junior Rachel Rich also had a good day, carding her lowest round of the tournament with a 73. 

WKU will travel to Jacksonville, Florida to compete in the UNF Intervollegiate hosted by the University of North Florida, March 6-7.
