WKU #13, Katie Erwin, a senior from Louisville, Ky takes a corner kick in the Hilltoppers game against the University of Texas at El Paso on Sept. 22, 2022. The Hilltoppers upset the Miners 1-0.

In their second straight game at the WKU Soccer Complex, The Lady Toppers opened October with a win, defeating the Chicago State Cougars 2-0 Sunday afternoon.

“I think today, the idea of a non-conference game in the middle of conference play was to try and get some other people going that maybe haven’t played as much and get them some minutes.” Head Coach Jason Neidell said. “We started eight different players for today’s contest. It was really an opportunity to get some other players on the field and give some players who have racked up a lot of minutes some rest.”

Graduate Olivia Cooke scored her second goal of the season in the 11th minute and junior Aspen Seaich scored in the 75th minute on a free kick.  This was Seaich’s first goal of the season.  The Lady Toppers outshot Chicago State 11-0, fine-tuning their offense in preparation for conference play.

Despite sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Davis not playing, WKU blanketed the Cougars on defense.  The team earned their 6th shutout win of the season.

Graduate goalkeeper Emma Tompkins started her first game of the season and earned a clean sheet, with four saves in the game.

The Lady Toppers will head to El Paso to face the UTEP Miners Saturday, October 7th in their return to conference play.
