WKU Softball lost two games to Liberty in its first home conference series of the 2025 season.
The Hilltoppers are 14-11 on the season and have accumulated a five-game losing streak.
“We’re just going to have to learn from these past games and this losing streak that we’ve created,” senior catcher Randi Drinnon said.
The original three-game series was shortened to a Friday doubleheader “due to weather and field conditions” on Sunday, according to a press release from WKU Athletics.
Game 1
WKU suffered its first shutout loss in its home conference opener against Liberty.
Liberty flexed its offensive muscles throughout the entire game. The Flames’ 12 hits and seven RBIs bested the Hilltoppers two hits and zero RBIs. Liberty also combined for three doubles, a triple and two home runs.
The Hilltoppers’ unsuccessful performance concluded in a 10-0 WKU defeat.
Game 2
Despite its looks of a comeback, WKU fell to Liberty 10-3 in the final Friday game.
Liberty put the first run on the board in the top of the first. WKU ended its scoring drought with a run from sophomore shortstop Morgan Sharpe and a two-RBI double from freshman center fielder Kennedy Stinson. The Hilltoppers led 3-1 after the first.
The Flames responded in the top of the second with a two-RBI homer, tying the game at 3-3. Liberty retired the first three WKU batters in the bottom of the second.
Neither team scored in the third, fourth or fifth innings.
Liberty took back control of the game in the top of the sixth. Three home runs – two of which were two RBI homers – paired with two RBI singles put Liberty up 10-3. The Hilltoppers couldn’t connect in the bottom of the sixth.
The seventh inning saw no scoring from either team. Despite a 3-1 lead after the first, the Hilltoppers suffered a 10-3 loss in game two.
“I just think we got outperformed,” Head coach Amy Tudor said. “(We) didn’t have our best day all the way around.”
WKU will look to end its losing streak March 21-23 at the University of Texas at El Paso.
