Greek Week entails a packed schedule, numerous competitions where WKU’s fraternity and sorority chapters vie for the win, but how is that champion decided?
Events and activities offer varying amounts of Greek Week points to participating sororities and fraternities. Participation in each Greek Week event automatically grants two points to all participating organizations, but chapters that win individual events gain even more points toward their overall score. The highest-scoring organization on Sunday will be crowned Greek Week winner at Convocation.
Social Media & Public Relations
In addition to event participation, Greek organizations can earn points through social media posts.
The four weeks before Greek Week each had a designated hashtag and theme. Greek organizations can receive one point per week by creating an Instagram post or reel using the hashtag. The post themes comprised scholarship, service, leadership and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Organizations can gain more points by reposting content from the @wku_greekweek Instagram page. Reposts must occur within two days of the original posts to count. Organizations may continue to earn points from reposting until Saturday night with the conclusion of Spring Sing. Ten reposts garner one point, 15 reposts garner three points and over 20 reposts garner five points.
Greek Week points may also be subtracted for social media activity. Each reported incident of a deliberately negative post detracts one point from the overall total of that individual’s fraternity or sorority.
Tug & Spring Sing
The largest potential for point-earning happens at Tug and Spring Sing. First place at either event will win 10 points, second place will win eight points, third place will win six points and fourth place will win four points.
Tug will take place on Friday at the WKU Ag Exposition Center. Spring Sing will be presented Saturday in Diddle Arena.
Along with the substantial opportunity to earn points, Tug and Spring Sing have ample opportunity to lose points, too.
Disobeying Tug restrictions, such as allowing more than 11 people on the Tug field per team (eight participants, two coaches and one photographer), will result in a deduction of one point from that chapter’s overall Greek Week score. Other errors that result in point loss include disobeying rental rope care instructions, unsportsmanlike conduct, failure to refill holes, leaving items on the field and failure to assign two people to clean up after Tug.
For Spring Sing, performances that run over the eight-minute limit will receive a one-point deduction per 15 seconds exceeded. Like Tug, chapters must also assign members to stay behind and clean up, or face point loss.
Blood Drive
The three-day blood drive in the Preston Health & Activities Center is also a potential big point-getter for Greek organizations, depending on how many donors they bring.
Points are given based on the percentage of chapter participation. Percentages are calculated using the total number of chapter members on a fraternity or sorority’s submitted roster. Members and non-members of a chapter can count toward that organization’s participation percentage, as long as they sign in and out of the drive.
For each 10% of participation, a Greek organization receives one point. If an organization achieved 100% participation, as in, they had as many donors as chapter members, they will receive 10 points.
The three chapters with the highest percentages will receive three, two and one additional point in descending order.
Chapters must be careful about recruiting donors, however, as solicitation on Preston Center property or bribery will result in the loss of 50% of their points accumulated during the blood drive.
The rules require organizations to contribute a collective eight volunteer hours for the blood drive. The hours may be spread across chapter members and blood drive days. If uncompleted, the chapter will lose two points from its overall score.
Canstruct, Banner, Greek Jeopardy & Events Day
Philanthropy Day, or Canstruct, on Saturday, April 18, Banner on Monday, Greek Jeopardy on Tuesday and Events Day on Wednesday each award the same amount of points to the top three winners. First place receives five points, second place receives four points and third place receives three points.
Canstruct offers additional points for the average number of cans per chapter member. Ten cans per member earns one point, and each 10 can increase up to 40 cans per member earns one additional point up to four points. Canstruct, unlike other events, doesn’t award automatic participation points. Chapters must donate over 250 cans to be considered participating.
The highest amount of points a Greek organization can accumulate, across all Greek Week events, is 70. In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the number of first-place wins.
