After eight years of working for WKU, John Sunnygard, the associate provost for global learning and international affairs, celebrated retirement in the Mahurin Honors College and International Center on Monday. 

Sunnygard worked at WKU for eight years before his retirement at the end of May. 

“I love our students,” Sunnygard said. “It’s really special creating opportunities for Kentucky students to be able to study abroad.” 

The party opened the floor for colleagues and friends of Sunnygard to give their remarks. Sunnygard received short speeches from coworkers such as Bud Fischer, provost and vice president of academic affairs. 

“What I really hope for John is that ultimately he now gets to do some relaxation and fun,” Fischer said.

Colleagues such as Danielle Burris, an international admissions and programming specialist, said Sunnygard’s light spirit and fun personality will be missed. Burris reminisced on her favorite aspects of working with Sunnygard. 

“He always inevitably made us laugh at every staff meeting,” Burris said. “He always wears some kind of funny socks, and it’s awesome.”

Sunnygard says he looks forward to his vacation with his wife to Scotland, spending time with his dogs, chickens and cats, and “getting my schedule back.” 

“It’s really been an honor and a pleasure to work at WKU, and I’ve learned so much here,” Sunnygard said.
