Caboni addresses budget cuts in email to faculty and staff

In an email sent to all faculty and staff on Monday afternoon, President Timothy Caboni addressed the impact Governor Matt Bevin’s two-year budget plan could have on WKU. 
 
Bevin presented his budget address to the state legislature last Tuesday, proposing a 6.25 percent reduction across all state agencies including higher education. 
 
The budget also includes substantial reductions to and the elimination of 70 state-funded programs, including a $750,000 cut in funding to the Kentucky Mesonet which is housed on WKU’s campus. The Mesonet is a statewide weather monitoring operation. 
 
“As we work through the details of the various measures affecting higher education, it’s important to remember that this is the beginning of a long process,” Caboni wrote. “We will maintain a constant presence in Frankfort throughout the legislative session, and we will work diligently to improve the outcome for higher education as a whole and WKU specifically.”
 
Caboni also noted that the proposal only complicates WKU’s situation in regards to the university’s pension obligation that is projected to increase by $9 million in July. 
 
The university is already combatting a $15 million deficit due to declining enrollment numbers over the past four years. 
 
“I don’t have to do the math for you to see that our fiscal challenges are substantial,” Caboni wrote.
