The hands of a “costalero” can be seen poking out from the bottom of a “paso” on April 16, 2017. During the week of “Semana Santa” in Granada, Spain, hundreds of people crowd the streets to see processions of “pasos”, or large floats depicting different scenes from the Catholic Mysteries of the Rosary. The “pasos” are carried by “costaleros”, so named for the distinctive sack-like headdresses they wear as protection while carrying the floats through the streets. The “costaleros” remain hidden from sight for most of the procession, giving the illusion of the float moving on its own.
