Big Red is one of the most confusing mascots in the NCAA, according to the website ChaCha.

The website, which is most well-known for providing answers to questions via text message for free, placed Big Red right behind the Stanford Cardinal.

Big Red shares the list with mascots like Dartmouth College’s unofficial mascot Keggy the Keg, Nebraska University’s Lil’ Red, and the University of Alabama’s Big Al.

Some of the confusion comes from what exactly a Hilltopper is, and if Big Red is one.

Paula Davids, athletic marketing director and “Big Red’s Mom”, said that Big Red isn’t so much a representation of a Hilltopper but rather the embodiment of the spirit of Western.

“To me, Big Red is the spirit of Western,” Davids said. “Big Red is just that, Big Red…everything the Big Red does is in the spirit of Western.”
