The WKU volleyball team claimed its first win of the 2010 season by splitting a pair of matches Saturday at the Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Ind.

Yesterday in the round-robin Premier, the Lady Toppers (1-2) lost their first match against Purdue.

WKU came away with a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-9, 25-16) win over Central Michigan Saturday — the last day of the Premier — after starting the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-28, 25-19) loss to No. 24 Northern Iowa.

Against the Chippewas (0-3), WKU posted 50 kills, 49 digs, 22 blocks and a .349 hitting percentage. Central Michigan led only twice.

But in the first match of the day, Northern Iowa (2-0) prevailed, winning in straight sets.

“It was a great start to our season,” WKU Head Coach Travis Hudson said, “We played three championship-caliber teams. I’m really really pleased with our progress.”

The Lady Tops will return at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a midweek contest with Tennessee State in Nashville, Tenn.
