Student choreographers will present their original works on Friday.
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell H. Miller Theatre in the Fine Arts Center (FAC). Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or online until 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
Students in Associate Professor Meghen McKinley’s Choreography 1 class were tasked to create group choreography, which will feature a variety of dance genres and inspirations, such as improvisational and ballet.
“This informal showcase provides a way for dancers to work through the process of creating work, finding new ways to explore ideas and concepts, and develop their own choreographic methods,” McKinley wrote in an email to the Herald. “What is special about choreography is that dancers learn how to organize and create a tangible piece that was once just an idea or vision in their heads.”
Choreography 1 and other Visual Media for Dance students, also taught by McKinley, will host the showcase.
“It’s really rewarding to get to see them learning from our faculty and then also getting the opportunity to provide feedback myself to the students in a class that I took many years ago.” said Lindy Fischer, a senior dance major and teaching assistant for Choreography 1.
According to Fischer, this year, there will be a brand new pre-show organized by Ella Claire Johns, a junior dance and exercise science major. The pre-show will highlight other student choreographers and allow them to share time in the spotlight.
This year’s showcase will utilize projections for the dancers to perform in front of, which Fischer said is meant to add variety to the performance. These projections will be run by students from the Visual Media for Dance course.
“It’s a great way to make choreography and their work accessible, as this is something that’s often seen in the studio or backstage,” Fischer said. “This is a really exciting time for them.”
