The Rocky Horror Picture Show will have a shadow cast showing at the Capitol Theater on October 31.
Rocky Horror is a cult classic horror comedy musical that follows newlyweds Brad and Janet as they come across a strange castle and its even stranger inhabitants. The movie touches on themes of sexual identity and exploration, love and otherness.
The Capitol’s showing will feature a shadow cast, a group of actors that act out the movie as it occurs, made up of members of WKU’s chapter of the Alpha Psi Omega theater fraternity. This is the second year APO has done a shadow cast since COVID-19.
Garrett Milby, a sophomore double major in high school English education and theater, will be playing the star role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. He said this year’s shadow cast will feature an all-new cast under the direction of new directors, as well as two showings, so that more people can attend.
“This year, we’re just having a good time,” Milby said. “We’re just being silly on stage.”
Audience members are also encouraged to interact with the cast and movie through calls and responses, dancing, singing and throwing props at specific times.
Milby said he has seen a resurgence in Rocky Horror’s popularity due to this year marking the 50th anniversary of the movie.
Rocky Horror will have a showing at 9 p.m. and another at midnight. The seats are first-come, first-serve, and the first 50 people at each showing will receive a prop bag with props to throw during the movie.
Milby said that anyone who comes to watch Rocky Horror shouldn’t feel awkward since some of the cast has never dressed or performed in this way and may be feeling the same.
“It’s all about the campness of it,” said Milby. “So come dressed, ready to have fun in any way, shape or form.”
