The arm of an aerial lift truck holding a bucket of 300 ducks extended to the sky as onlookers watched from below during the second Annual Downtown Duck Drop, Monday.
The event, which took place on Eighth Avenue in Downtown Bowling Green, was a collaborative effort by The City of Bowling Green, Houchens Food Group and Warren County Public Library.
Described on its website as a “hilariously simple fundraiser,” the event partnered with 22 local businesses to raise money for various downtown festivals throughout the year, including Duncan Hines Festival, Harvest Festival and Light Up BGKY.
Individuals had the chance to purchase a duck for $10, with a purchase maximum of 10 ducks. Whoever’s purchased duck landed on the spot closest to the chalk-drawn duck below won a $100 Houchen’s Food Group gift card and holiday goody basket of gift cards to Mellow Mushroom, Vette City Vintage, Gerard’s 1907 Tavern and more. The event was livestreamed on Facebook, where they announced the winner.
Downtown Development Coordinator Telia Butler said the city raised $1,000, $200 more than last year’s amount.
Butler said most of the funds from the Duck Drop will be directed toward the new Duncan Hines Festival that brought in 13,000 attendees last year, a week-long annual event in early June dedicated to Bowling Green-raised business tycoon Duncan Hines.
“That is just because it is the newest of the events and doesn’t have the budget compared to Harvest Fest,” Butler said. The annual event will only be celebrating its third year this upcoming June.
