Turns out a fashion fiasco is all it takes to fuel a fire.
Since 1914, the Battle of the Bluegrass has been a well-known rivalry in the state of Kentucky. The tension between WKU and Eastern Kentucky University has continued to grow over the course of 86 games, despite the two teams not playing since 2017.
WKU leads the series 48-35-3 and has won the last three games.
As the game approaches this Saturday, the main concern of the media is not in fact football – but attire.
On July 10, WKU announced that their game against EKU would be a whiteout game, planning for the team to don an all-white look.
Earlier this week, however, WKU football released a statement informing fans that the white-out game would no longer feature white uniforms.
“EKU informed us on Tuesday of this week that they would be exercising their right as the visiting team to wear white uniforms, thus forcing us to wear red jerseys on Saturday,” WKU football posted on X.
WKU will host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Houchens-Smith Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
“Very excited to get back home and have our first home game,” WKU Head Coach Tyson Helton said. “It should be a great atmosphere. Looking forward to a big white out game. Got a really good opponent in EKU.”
The Colonels are coming off a loss to Mississippi State, losing 56-7 to the Bulldogs. EKU Head Coach Walt Wells is 22-22 in five seasons with the team.
After a rough outing against Alabama last Saturday, WKU will look to bounce back in their home opener.
WKU has won three straight home openers and is 19-10 overall in home games under Helton.
“We are nowhere near where we want to be yet,” WKU Offensive Coordinator Will Friend said. “I think we have the ability to have a good football team. We just have to improve. You’ve got to go from week one to week two and you want to improve. The goal of this team all year long is to get better every week, and both rushing and throwing the football we have to be better. We have to be able to do both.”
