Redshirt sophomore Caden Veltkamp will start in his first game of his collegiate career, leading the Hilltoppers for a Parents & Family Weekend showdown against the defending MAC Champions, the Toledo Rockets.
In the game against Middle Tennessee State, Veltkamp led the offense to 631 total yards. The Hilltoppers passed for 481 yards with Finley and Veltkamp combined, then added 150 yards on the ground with no turnovers. The offense overwhelmed the Blue Raiders, while the defense held MTSU to 21 points.
“Excited to be back home again,” Head Coach Tyson Helton said. “We get to play a really good Toledo team. They’ve done a fantastic job. Very talented football team. Excited about the opportunity to play at home.
The Hilltoppers average 414.3 yards per game and 102.7 rushing yards per game. Junior L.T. Sanders and senior Elijah Young have been a big contribution to the offense, with both touting more than 80 yards rushing on the season.
Senior wide receiver Kisean Johnson has racked up 100 yards receiving in his last two games, making him the first WKU wide receiver with back to back 100 receiving yard games since 2022 (Malachi Corley and Jaylen Hill).
Toledo has taken down their first three opponents this season with ease, their last win being a dominant road win over Mississippi State. The team averages 42.7 points per game, which outdoes WKU’s 26.7 points per game.
Toledo’s quarterback, junior Tucker Gleason, has thrown for 662 yards with nine touchdowns and no turnovers. He can run, averaging five yards a carry. The Rockets average 139.7 rushing yards per game, which adds into their 386 yards per game.
