WKU Women’s Basketball secured the season sweep over the Sam Houston State Bearkats Thursday night with a 57-45 road win.
The stifling defense of the Lady Toppers caused problems for the Bearkats all night. WKU held SHSU to just 35% shooting from the field. The Bearkats went 0-12 on 3-point shots.
Junior guard Josie Gilvin took over in the second half after a productive second quarter. Gilvin racked up 13 of her points in the second half. Gilvin also racked up her second straight double-double securing 23 points and 11 rebounds.
First Half
It was a slow start for the Lady Toppers, falling behind 7-2 going into the media timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Toppers put points on the board behind four points from sophomore guard Mackenzie Chatfield. SHSU held on to the lead going into the second quarter 12-9.
Coming out in the second quarter, WKU went on a 10-2 run and went up 19-14 with five minutes left in the half. Gilvin took over for the Lady Toppers in the quarter scoring 10 points. The Lady Toppers went into the halftime break with a slim 28-24 lead.
Second Half
WKU continued where they left off jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the half up 34-24. Gilvin continued her hot scoring streak scoring nine more points as the Lady Toppers took a 47-36 lead into the final quarter.
Going into the media timeout SHSU went on a 5-2 run as the Lady Toppers held onto a 49-41 lead. A four-minute scoring drought from the Lady Toppers allowed the Bearkats to continue chipping away, pulling within four, 49-45, with a little over a minute left. Down four the Bearkats were forced to foul, leading WKU to take a 57-45 lead with just 20 seconds left to secure the win.
The Lady Toppers will finish out their three-game road stretch as they travel to Louisiana Tech Saturday for their final regular season meeting.
