The WKU Student Government Association passed a bill Tuesday to greenlight a fundraiser event to raise money for an organization that supports victims of sexual harm.
The event will be called “Sippin’ in September,” and will utilize community partners Pelican’s Snowcones and Tay Tay’s Lemonade.

The organization, Hope Harbor, sets out to support victims of sexual harm and provide the necessary care and support they may not be able to get elsewhere. Some of these services include counseling sessions tailored to each individual, as well as support for legal advocacy to those unsure of the first steps to take.
Pelican’s Snowcones pledged to donate 20% of all the money raised from the event to be given to Hope Harbor to support their cause. Jade Ismail, author of the bill and chair of the SGA Action and Opportunity Committee, expressed her excitement about the fundraiser and the community benefits that will come from it.
Ismail said she’s passionate about this fundraiser and hopes to see it succeed.
“It’s hard sometimes to find resources, it’s hard to feel like you aren’t alone in this process and I’ve seen firsthand Hope Harbor lift out a hand and be a lighthouse for people who need it,” Ismail said.
Along with the passing of this new bill, Vice President Savanna Kurtz released updates regarding the Pearce Ford Tower air conditioning. In a meeting with Catherine Laroche, executive director of Housing and Residence Life, she told SGA that WKU received a chiller on Aug. 25.
“Contractors anticipate the process to be completed by the end of the week,” Kurtz said.
SGA also sees the addition of eight new members sworn in by Blake Graham of the Judicial Council.
