The University of Kentucky will host a national expert on higher education Thursday for a discussion, also livestreamed on Zoom, about the erosion of academic freedom in the United States.
The UK chapter of the American Association of University Professors, with support from the Heterodox Academy, will host Steven Brint on Thursday for a public talk titled “The Erosion of Academic Freedom in the United States: A State and Movements- Based Analysis.” The event will be held in the Alumni Gallery of the William T. Young Library.
Brint’s presentation will look at how academic freedom has changed across the country and the political and social forces shaping those changes. The AAUP said the event is aimed at faculty, students and staff who want to better understand current pressures on teaching and research.
“Prof. Brint is one of the most discerning observers of higher education,” according to the invitation from UK. “He is a highly sought-after speaker who brings balanced views and intellectual integrity to his scholarly discussions.”
Those who cannot attend in person will be able to watch the event live on Zoom at 4 p.m. CST (5 p.m. EST)
“We hope you will join us for what will certainly be an illuminating talk,” the invitation said.
