The WKU Student Government Association announced at its meeting on Aug. 19 it will be adding a student-painted mural to a column in the SGA chambers.
SGA Chief Communications Officer Preston Jenkins said the association is looking to enlist four separate artists to each paint one side of the column.
“The only thing we are asking from then specifically is to incorporate one or two WKU campus elements, for example, Guthrie clock tower, Cherry Hall, white squirrel, Big Red, etcetera,” Jenkins said. “Other than that, we are giving them full creative freedom over the design process. I feel as that is the best way for artists to shine, to give them a couple ideas and just let them do the work.”
Jenkins emphasized the importance of having student artists paint the mural. He said he’s hopeful that by exhibiting student artwork, people will get a glimpse into the environment at SGA and the campus.
“The heart of the Student Government Association is the word ‘Student,’” Jenkins said. “One of the main reasons I and many others wanted to get involved in SGA is to support our fellow Hilltoppers.”
Jenkins said he has had multiple artists reach out expressing interest in being a part of this project, and plans to make the final selections by Friday, Sept. 19. Jenkins is also planning on having a meeting with all four artists, once confirmed, so that they can coordinate designs.
Jenkins said students interested in painting the column can email [email protected] with examples of their work and a proposal of what they want to paint. The deadline to enter is Friday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m.
Jenkins wanted the takeaway from this project to be the impact that the students had on WKU’s campus.
“I believe this project is a wonderful opportunity for Hilltoppers to showcase their talents to their peers and leave a lasting legacy on campus,” Jenkins said.
