The Counseling Center will host a free suicide prevention training on Wednesday.
The training will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. in the SGA chambers, Downing Student Union room 2081. It will teach the common causes and signs of suicidal behavior, as well as give resources to help someone in a crisis.
The training will use the Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) approach to suicide prevention. It will be led by staff psychologist training coordinator Masami Matasyuki, and psychology interns Magen McMillian and Jordyn Minifie.
QPR trains participants to become “gatekeepers”, someone in a position to recognize and identify signs of a crisis and warning signs, according to the QPR Institute. Gatekeepers learn to “recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope and know how to get help and save a life.”
